New chip designs for the AI era
The world of artificial intelligence (AI) is about to undergo a radical transformation thanks to the development of a new type of chip designed specifically to handle AI workloads.
Research supported by DARPA aims to overcome these limitations through the funding of $18.6 million to EnCharge AI, a California-based company founded by Professor Naveen Verma from Princeton University.
The funding is a part of DARPA’s OPTIMA (Optimum Processing Technology Inside Memory Arrays) project, an initiative worth $78 million. This project aims to develop new chip models that can manage artificial intelligence applications using fewer computational resources, thereby saving energy and space.
The chip, which reinvents the physics of computation, promises to make powerful AI systems much more compact, faster, and energy-efficient compared to the advanced semiconductors currently in use.
